Introducing My Website, HONEST MEDICINE: My Dream for the Future

If my name, Julia Schopick, doesn't mean much to you now, I hope that soon it will, because with this website, I’m planning to join the many other folks out there who are intent on making important information about the so-called “health care” system available to everyone.

In my work life, I have been a Public Relations consultant for over 20 years, and have concentrated on promoting professionals and private practitioners. Some, but not all, of my favorite clients have been holistic health practitioners.

For the past 15 years, until the recent death of my husband Tim Fisher at the age of 56, I have also been a medical advocate – ever since Tim was first diagnosed in 1990 at the age of 40 with an aggressive and cancerous brain tumor. Together, we navigated through the bowels of the medical/pharmaceutical/hospital complex to find solutions that extended his life, and improved its quality. Since Tim survived many years beyond medical expectations, I will consider our navigation a success. But insofar as I had to fight medical and governmental folks every inch of the way in order to get what we both considered to be exciting, non-toxic and cutting-edge treatments for Tim, I would have to say that my efforts were not wholly successful.

I often tell people that every time I had an “aha!” moment -- when I found something that really helped Tim -- I could rely on the medical folks to say, “ah, no!” But I knew that Tim wanted me to find whatever treatments I could that might help him. So we kept doing what we were doing, mostly without the doctors' support or interest -- and most often, without insurance coverage.

When it became obvious that Tim was exceeding the doctors’ expectations for him, you would have thought that at least one of them might have said: “Tell me little bit about the treatments you’ve been using for Tim.” If you thought that, you couldn't have been more WRONG.

The truth is that, once there was some success behind us, we heard things like, “Just keep doing what you’re doing.” No one was curious at all.

In 2001, Tim had his first brain tumor recurrence. I must point out here that this was his first recurrence in 11 years – highly miraculous for someone with such an aggressive cancer. Unfortunately, the doctors didn’t foresee (although I must admit that I did foresee) the possible horror that could – and did -- ensue. Because his skin had been radiated years earlier, and also because his skin was so fragile from surgeries for complications from years past, his head became infected and didn’t heal this time, either. But whereas, in past years, his head had finally healed, this time he leaked cranial fluid for a total of 8 months, leading him to be severely brain injured for the last 4 years of his life.

It was during this time that I was to learn how really life-threatening the medical establishment can be. Tim HAD to be hospitalized several times, because when someone is leaking cranial fluid, you’ve got to try to stop it. And unfortunately, you can’t really do that at home.

During those 8 months of hospitalization, I was to learn that, even if someone is a “miracle survivor,” when hospitalized, he becomes a virtual prisoner. At first, they “allowed” me to bring him organic food from home. But almost immediately, they insisted that I stop his supplements -- the same supplements that had kept him so amazingly healthy for 11 years. They also insisted that he eat sugar, even though all common sense says that processed sugar has no merit at all, and in fact, can actually feed cancer cells, should there be any lurking in one’s body.

Finally, saying that they thought that perhaps my home cooked (organic) meals might be what was keeping his skin from healing (!!!), they demanded that he eat only hospital food.

This was amazing to me. But I began to see that it was the rule, rather than the exception. It is only when you are seriously ill that you are truly and totally at the mercy of “the system.”

Perhaps the most upsetting thing that happened – and the thing that made me realize once and for all that there was no saving “the system” without first exposing it – was when, through my research and professional contacts, I thankfully located the treatment that finally stopped Tim’s head from leaking. It was a product called Silverlon, and before Tim, it had been used successfully for burns and diabetic wounds, but never before for a non-healing post-surgical head wound -- which is, by the way, a not-so-uncommon complication from brain surgery. Luckily, Tim’s doctor “let” me use it on Tim’s head. We were pioneers!

What happened next was very exciting – but ultimately upsetting: Tim’s head stopped leaking on the very day Silverlon was applied (this was exciting!). Not so exciting, and in fact, very troubling, was the fact that the doctors were not only NOT at all curious about this product or Tim’s success with it. In fact, some of them even tried to tell me that it wasn’t the Silverlon, but rather their vancomycin (the antibiotic Tim had been on for weeks) that had done the trick! (When I pointed out that Tim had been on vancomycin for many weeks prior to the application of Silverlon, one doctor said, “But vanco is like that. It kicks in.”)

As you can imagine, I was extremely frustrated by this. I decided I had to do something to get the word out there. As a PR consultant, I knew that when something is in print, it has more credibility, so (being a writer), I wrote an article that was published by the National Brain Tumor Foundation in their newsletter –- as their cover story. After this article was published, my phone started to ring off the hook: “My brother (my sister, my mother, my father) is in the hospital infected and leaking cranial fluid. Please help me!” Excited, I called the doctor who invented Silverlon, Bart Flick, MD, and begged him to make the product available to these people. I can be pretty persuasive, and that’s exactly what he did.

Imagine my surprise (I was still naive, I admit) when NOT ONE of these patients’ doctors was willing to try this product – even though it was FDA-approved for all wounds, and even though it looked like their patents might be dying! Not one of them was curious enough even to take a look at the information I emailed them, which included clinical tests and success stories. Not one of them asked to talk with Dr. Bart Flick, who had not only made the product available for free, but made himself available to talk with the doctors. Not one. One hospital even said they had “lost” the overnight delivery of Silverlon.

It was then that I resolved that, one day I would go very public about the medical establishment. That someday, I would do my best not only to expose the “what is,” but to tell people about the exciting possibilities (such as, but not limited to, Silverlon) that are out there now – often being suppressed; treatments that might well work better than those their doctors are telling them about.

One of my aims with this website is to do just that. Through my own writings, as well as the writings of others, I will make the “real story” available to people. I plan to have a very extensive "articles" section, as well as lots of links to other sites that provide information that I consider crucial. I invite you to suggest links and articles, as well.

Perhaps just as important, I hope that one day, my website will be considered to be of enough consequence for the more Conventional Media to at least consult it to see what the “other side” is up to. Perhaps they’ll even share some of the information they find here, as well.

Finally, it is my hope that, through this website, through my other writings, and through the writings of others, I will be able to help to bring about some very important and needed changes in every area of "medical care" and "healthcare." Right now, the situation is so dismal that I hesitate to even use the word “healthcare” at all, since the emphasis in this country is on neither “health” nor “care.”
