Personal Note from the Author, Julia Schopick
Welcome to my media page. I am happy you landed here.
And welcome to my just-published book, HONEST MEDICINE: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for Life-Threatening Diseases.
I’m available for interviews for your radio or television show, or for an article in your magazine or newspaper, or website or blog.
HONEST MEDICINE contains all the elements that make for a great interview.
Controversy: HONEST MEDICINE features 4 treatments that I believe doctors really should prescribe routinely for life-threatening conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy and liver disease. Yet, because of concerns that have nothing to do with patient care—namely financial concerns—these treatments are all but ignored by most conventional doctors.
YET, hundreds of thousands of patients have found these treatments through their own research, and—because of these treatments—are thriving today.
Emotion: 14 chapters have been contributed by patients who have been helped by these treatments.
Their stories are riveting:
- How a mother’s struggle to find treatment for her son’s epilepsy finally led her to success with a time-tested, non-toxic diet; she started an organization to educate other parents about it.
- How a woman with liver disease was told she had only a few months to live, but after receiving an innovative treatment from a doctor featured in this book she is alive and well eight years later.
- How multiple sclerosis patients dramatically improved after using an inexpensive, off-label drug that was approved at higher doses years earlier. Yet, their doctors questioned the success they achieved even after they saw the amazing results.
And finally:
Humor: I’ll make a really entertaining guest. I know how to combine seriousness with humor, while at the same time, being educational.

Biographical Information
Julia Schopick is the creator of the award-winning blog, HonestMedicine.com, and has been a published writer and a public relations consultant for more than twenty years. When her husband Tim Fisher became ill in 1990 with a cancerous brain tumor, Julia became his medical advocate and began writing on topics relating to health and medicine that were published in several publications, including American Medical News (the AMA publication), ADVANCE (the professional publication for physical therapists), SEARCH (the newsletter of the National Brain Tumor Foundation) and Alternative and Complementary Therapies (a publication for holistic health practitioners).
In addition, her work and essays have been featured in the British Medical Journal, Modern Maturity and the Chicago Sun-Times. Julia’s mission is to use her writing and public relations skills to inform the world about little-known but promising treatments via her website, her presentations and this book, and to empower people in their health choices.
About the Book
HONEST MEDICINE introduces four lifesaving treatments that have been effectively treating—and in some cases curing—people for 25-90 years. However, for reasons of profitability (or lack thereof), these treatments have not been universally accepted. The treatments are:
- Low Dose Naltrexone for autoimmune diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease) HIV/AIDS and some cancers
- The Ketogenic Diet for pediatric epilepsy
- Intravenous alpha lipoic acid, for terminal liver disease and some cancers
- Silverlon for non-healing wounds.
This book has already received a great deal of praise:
- Ronald Hoffman, MD: "I predict that Honest Medicine will become an instant classic."
- Jeffrey Dach, MD: "A revolution is at hand, and Julia's new book, Honest Medicine, is leading the charge with banner held high."
- Mary Shomon: "Julia Schopick is one of those rare people who can go through an agonizingly difficult experience and go on to transform her pain into a passionate, clear-headed campaign to help others."
- David Brownstein, MD: “Honest Medicine should be required reading for all physicians and patients searching for safe and effective therapies."

Online & Print Interviews
October 17, 2011: Journalist Matt Robinson wrote an article for the Jewish Journal-Boston North about Julia and Honest Medicine.
Another version of Robinson's article about Honest Medicine was featured in the JointMedia News Service, an independent, non-profit, editorial content and business-services resource for media, reaching Jewish communities throughout the English-speaking world.
You can read the complete article here.
September 30, 2011: Julia was interviewed for The Atlantic’s “9 1/2 Questions” column by Nicholas Jackson, associate editor for The Atlantic’s website, where he oversees the Life Channel. Here, she discusses how the most expensive treatments aren't always the best, the power of social media to connect patients and doctors, and why people shouldn't always believe what they hear and see. Read Julia's complete interview here.
Mary Jo Bean, contributor to Honest Medicine, is featured in her local newspaper, THE GARVIN COUNTY NEWS STAR, June 2, 2011. "Paoli resident Mary Jo Bean was featured recently in a book by author Julia Schopick, titled HONEST MEDICINE: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for Life-Threatening Diseases. Ms. Bean contributed a chapter to this Amazon.com bestselling book, in which she describes her experience finding a successful treatment for her terminal liver disease."

Julia now has a monthly “expert column” on the well-respected website, www.Healthy.net.
Her first column, “An Honest Medicine Doctor,” is about her father, Dr. Lou Schopick, a general practice physician in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in the 1950s and 1960s. This column explains where Julia first learned that the medical system left much to be desired.
Her second column, "Another Honest Medicine Story," is about her grandmother, who to this day, inspires Julia with admiration and awe, especially because of the way she and her grandfather handled her cancer diagnosis in 1928, when Julia's mom was just 11 years old.
Julia's third column, "Silverlon: The 'Honest Medicine' Treatment That Started It All," recounts how Silverlon and especially the doctors reaction to how it helped her husband sparked her to educate the public about treatments that are effective and innovative, but that most conventional doctors don’t know about yet.
Julia's fourth column, "Low Dose Naltrexone: One Of The Treatments I Feature In HONEST MEDICINE," shares what LDN is, how it helps patients and how it was developed. Julia believes that LDN is, without a doubt, one of the most important medical discoveries of the twentieth century—if not the most important. It certainly is the cheapest and most versatile of the treatments that she profiles in her book. And that it works for so many conditions is nothing short of remarkable. Read the rest of the column here.
Julia's fifth column at healthy.net is Three Lifesaving Treatments From HONEST MEDICINE And How I Chose Them.

Julia was interviewed by Nancy Humphreys of WORDMAPS, for her blog. The topic, "Should I Promote My Book on Radio Talk Shows?" is near and dear to Julia's heart, since radio is her favorite form of promotion. Radio, as Julia points out in this interview, gives her the opportunity to tell her "whole story" in whole sentences--rather than having to stick to 3-minute sound bites, like television requires. Dr. Whitaker's Health and Healing. Dr. Julian Whitaker's natural health newsletter, which has one of the widest circulations, has endorsed Honest Medicine in its June 2012 issue. Dr. Whitaker's front-page article is "Low-Dose Naltrexone: A Miracle Drug for Immune Challenges." Scroll to page 3. There you will see a box with recommended resources. Honest Medcine is called a "great source of additional information" about LDN. (And by the way, Dr. Whitaker wrote the cover quote for Honest Medicine!) Thank you, Dr. Whitaker! And a special thanks to his right-hand person, Peggy Dace, too!
Julia was honored that HONEST MEDICINE received a great review in ACAM's newsletter. (ACAM is the American College for Advancement in Medicine, one of the premier organizations with a membership almost entirely of holistic physicians.) Michelle Schiavo wrote that HONEST MEDICINE is a "must read" book. Read the entire review here.
Beginnings, the American Holistic Nurses Association publication, gave Honest Medicine this glowing review.
"This book and the author’s own award-winning website amply attest to her mission to use her writing and public relations skills to assist all people in their healthcare choices. I strongly recommend this book for holistic nurses."
Read the full book review here.
The Townsend Letter said some wonderful things about HONEST MEDICINE:
Honest Medicine all too clearly illustrates what is wrong with our health-care system: using very expensive medicine when lower-cost treatments are available; using extremely toxic drugs with serious side effects which then must be treated as well; prescribing unsafe drugs that kill and maim people, thus negatively affecting the morbidity and mortality statistics; and, perhaps the most insidious of all, unnecessary care. Because hospitals and physicians are paid for procedures, they have an incentive to do procedures, many of which are invasive and often harmful to patients.

The best book I have ever read in my entire life...
Happy birthday. Julia, this world needs more people like you in it. I have your book sitting here on my desk and I think every American should be required to read it. I honestly do. It's that powerful and that meaningful, and possibly besides the Bible the best book I have ever read in my entire life... I thank you so much for sharing what is near and dear to your heart through your research and your writing. Wishing you abundant blessings on your day and in everything you do!
-- Laura Berring Andrews, on Facebook
You are doing everyone a huge service ... Please keep up the good work!
Hello Julia! I first heard you on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory. I want to tell you that I bought your book, Honest Medicine, in the Kindle format for reading on the iPod Touch. I was especially interested in your chapters about Silverlon and am impressed with how well it worked for your husband. Thank you, Julia, for getting all this wonderful information about alternative cures out to the public! You are doing everyone a huge service by doing this! Please keep up the good work! Thank you again and take care!

I feel like I've been saved by an Angel
Julia Schopick's book has done an incredible service for MS sufferers like me. I had no idea about the LDN therapy she describes (despite consulting two pyisicians and getting all kinds of health newsletters). In addition, she went so far as to answer my emails regarding details of finding physicians working with this therapy. I feel like I've been saved by an Angel. Thank you, thank you Julia.

LDN: I'm glad you pointed me in this direction by writing your book
I just wanted you to know how fast things are changing for me. I started LDN on my own (overseas meds) 4 days ago. Usually I have to take some sort of pain med throughout the day for rheumatoid.
Several days before starting LDN my legs were aching clear up to my hips and my lower back felt strained. Not to mention my knees burn from the rheumatiod. After the 3rd day of LDN I was able to make trips around town & walk through the stores.. I also noticed I was able to bend my left knee much farther when putting on pants. Usually I can barely get it bent and my pants drag on the ground. Too much information maybe? ;) All of this was without having to take pain medication.
Anyways, I doubt it's a placebo effect. I'm thinking about keeping a journal. Next Monday I go back out on the road driving a semi with my husband. The real test for me is trying to get up out of the drivers seat after several hours of driving. I was having to hold on to support and wait for my knees to stretch, pop & crack before being able to put full weight on them. Actually, I have to double clutch and that's becoming a problem too. Talk about pain when you have to force your leg straight to force in the clutch.
It's a new start Julia. I'm glad you pointed me in this direction by writing your book. I'll check in once and awhile to brag - I hope. ;)
-- Cynthia Hunt
You are an inspiration: Thanks for letting people know ...
Julia, I just finished you book! Read it in 1 day! All I can say is OMG! I cried for these people and smiled when they got better! It is all about the money in healthcare so you have to be your own best advocate for you and your family! Thanks for letting people know this. I already know this because of my fibromyalgia, that I used to have, LOl ! You are an inspiration and I am with you sister!

An interesting and easy read

In Honest Medicine, Julia Schopick writes about four innovative treatments that many cutting-edge integrative doctors have successfully used for years. But never before, to my knowledge, have they been featured together in one book. Any patient who is interested in learning about nontoxic, inexpensive alternatives to costly, side-effect-laden pharmaceuticals should read Julia’s book. I predict that Honest Medicine will become an instant classic.
—Ronald Hoffman, MD, Author, Founder and Medical Director of the Hoffman Center in New York, Host of “Health Talk,” nationally syndicated radio talk show
Patients around the world have a compassionate new advocate and voice in Julia Schopick. Julia is one of those rare people in this world who can go through an agonizingly difficult experience and, instead of being paralyzed, can transform her pain into a passionate, clear-headed campaign to help others. Honest Medicine is a well-written, easy-to-understand look at treatments that have been all but overlooked by the medical world because they are not potential financial blockbusters. But they are potential lifesavers, as Schopick demonstrates in the book’s meticulous research and interviews with doctors, patients and advocates who use these treatments in their practices or have personally benefited from them.
—Mary Shomon, New York Times bestselling author of The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss
One of the themes in Julia’s book is her zeal and enthusiasm to change medicine for the better, yet she believes this to be impossible. I would disagree. After living and working in mainstream medicine for forty years, I have seen medicine change. It is continually changing. Join with Julia Schopick and thousands of other health activists demanding these effective treatments ignored by mainstream medicine. A revolution is at hand, and Julia’s
new book, Honest Medicine, is leading the charge with banner held high.
—Jeffrey Dach, MD, author of Natural Medicine 101, and founder of a Hollywood, Florida clinic, specializing in Bioidentical Hormones and Natural Thyroid
Honest Medicine is a much-needed book in this time of “health care reform.” In it, Julia Schopick provides a roadmap for effective solutions to many chronic conditions. Most importantly, the case histories Julia presents in Honest Medicine will provide hope to so many people suffering with chronic illnesses, by showing that patients do not have to take toxic pharmaceutical medications that neither treat the underlying cause of their illness nor improve the conditions. I recommend Honest Medicine to all who are open-minded and looking for safe, effective therapies that have a sound biochemical basis behind them. This book should be required reading for all physicians and patients searching for safe and effective therapies.
—David Brownstein, MD, Medical Director of the Center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, MI, and author of nine books on integrative medical topics
Rather than merely writing a book, a huge undertaking in itself, Julia Schopick has created a community of men and women who have joined her in presenting potentially lifesaving information in the service of others. The variety of voices sharing their experiences and expertise not only makes the book as easy to read and absorbing as a novel, I felt as if I had made some new friends along the way. These pages are filled with practical advice and information about a group of four treatments whose time has come. In addition to describing these treatments, Julia gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at healthcare as it is today and encourages us to imagine a better future—one individual at a time—until these treatments finally reach full acceptance. Thanks, Julia!
—Virginia McCullough, co-author with Paul Harch, MD, The Oxygen Revolution
Born out of personal tragedy, Julia Schopick’s Honest Medicine is a “must read.” Run out to get this book and learn how to prevent or even reverse disease with the often unknown, but potentially lifesaving treatments she features. Her outstanding interview with Wellness TalkRadio was lifechanging for so many of my listeners. I look forward to many more interviews with Julia regarding “patient-evidence-based treatments,” like those she writes about in this wonderful book.

Well done! Three decades as a physician has left me realizing that there are few illnesses that truly can’t be helped. The problem is not lack of effective treatments—but rather a medical system that will only approve and teach about patentable (and therefore very expensive) therapies. When doctors tell you they can’t help you, thank them for their honesty. And then read Julia Schopick’s book!
—Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of the best-selling book, From Fatigued to Fantastic! (3rd revised edition, Avery/Penguin Group)
Julia Schopick’s powerful new book, Honest Medicine, is a comprehensive and extremely well-researched work filled with fascinating alternative ways of combating many horrendous diseases that affect millions of people throughout the world. Her medical savvy reigns supreme throughout the book and is conveyed to us in a language that is totally understandable and relatable. Dr. Bernard Bihari, the pioneer of low dose naltrexone for autoimmune diseases, is one of the heroes of Julia’s book. He was also my partner for over twenty years. This tender warrior fought so gallantly to make this affordable, non-toxic drug more readily accessible to the public—to patients with autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, fibromyalgia and Crohn’s. Julia’s splendid book is a marvelous legacy to this remarkable man. I hope that people with autoimmune diseases will read Honest Medicine. But I also hope that everyone who has the slightest interest in, or curiosity about, the subject of health and how the immune system functions will read it, as well. Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to Julia for taking the time to care, and also to research and write Honest Medicine. Her commitment to getting the word out about LDN and other immune-boosting treatments shines brightly throughout the book.

March 11, 2011: Selected Works Book Store, Chicago, IL

Please join me, Julia Schopick, for a very special Chicago Book Event, taking place at my good friend Keith Peterson's bookstore, Selected Works.
I will be discussing and signing copies of my just-published book, "HONEST MEDICINE: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for Life-Threatening Diseases." My book, an Amazon.com Best-Seller, features four effective, inexpensive, non-toxic treatments for life-threatening diseases (eg, multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, pediatric epilepsy, liver disease, etc.). These treatments have been helping (and in some cases curing) people with these conditions for 25-90 years. Unfortunately, probably because they are not financial blockbusters for any pharmaceutical companies, most doctors don't know about them.
It is my mission to bring these treatments out into the open through my book, so that patients can make informed decisions about their health.
The only people I'm inviting to this event are those who live in the Chicago area. So I hope you will share this invitation with any and all of your Chicago-area Friends (Facebook or non-Facebook) who you think would enjoy learning about "Honest Medicine"!
