In 1990, my husband Tim’s first brain tumor was diagnosed. Soon after that, he suffered through chemotherapy, radiation and several infections, and underwent numerous surgeries to try to stem the infections.
It soon became obvious to me that his doctors were great at doing their “mechanics’ work” – operating, radiating and providing toxic (but effective) drugs. But they weren’t so good at helping us deal with the side effects of these conventional treatments. And they certainly weren’t helping me to help Tim regain his health.
These were the early days of the Internet, and I wasn’t at all proficient at doing medical research. Also, I was a terrified wife, and my husband was being hospitalized over and over, for serious complications arising from his original treatments. Each time, it looked really bad; each time, I thought he was dying. We desperately needed a research expert, skilled at finding innovative treatments for serious illnesses, to help us.
I’m not sure who told me about Jan Guthrie of The Health Resource, in Conway, Arkansas. I think I read about her in an article in a national women’s publication. Thankfully, she was just beginning to become nationally known for doing research for people with baffling, often life-threatening conditions. Now, she and her company are famous, and there have been articles about her in numerous national publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Readers Digest and Forbes. Today, celebrities like Naomi Judd also use her.
What did Jan do for Tim and me? First, she listened carefully to all our concerns and put together a several-hundred-page, comprehensive report detailing all the cutting edge treatments, both conventional and alternative, that applied to Tim’s condition. And also, extremely important, her reports included studies that I would have been able to show to Tim’s doctors -- had they been interested.
We used Jan’s services several times during Tim’s illness: in 1991, when he was first diagnosed; in 1994, when we were led to believe that Tim was experiencing a recurrence (he wasn’t); and again, when his overly-radiated, overly-sutured skin was having trouble healing. Each time, Jan provided us with a comprehensive report that proved to be extremely helpful. In the later years of Tim’s illness, I was becoming a more experienced researcher myself -- but NOT as experienced as Jan -- and I was going online to follow up on many of the research studies Jan had provided.
This combination –- plus the expertise of nutritionist Dr. Jeanne Wallace -- kept Tim alive, and in relatively good health, despite all the complications, for 10 years. I will forever be grateful to them both!
Jan’s own story is fascinating, and I encourage you to read about it on her site. Briefly, she started her business in 1984, not long after she herself was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. Her story is not so different from many of the people whom she helps. At first, she went to the doctors she was referred to, but their recommendations didn’t seem right to her. So, with her background in research, she was able to find the treatments and the doctor who have kept her alive and thriving for 22 years ago. She attributes her good health to a combination of mainstream and alternative therapies.
